Costa del Sol/San Pedro de Alcantara

San Pedro Alcantara is just 10 km. from Marbella, a few minutes drive away from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range and 20 km. from Estepona.

San Pedro de Alcántara owes its origin to the first Marqués del Duero, who founded the Agricultural Colony of San Pedro Alcántara in 1860 to house colonists working in the sugar cane and cotton plantations. Even though agriculture is still important in this area, since the 1970´s the town has become a thriving tourist area.

San Pedro´s stunning beach Today the resort is home to a number of luxury housing complexes, golf courses and excellent beaches, yet it still retains the features of its colonial past.

Places to visit include the Paleochristian Basilica de Vega del Mar, which dates back to the 4th century and was discovered in the 10th century. In and around the Basilica there is a Cementery, with some two hundred tombs of varius types.
The Parish Church, constructed in 1866 by the Marqués del Duero is also worth a visiting for it´s beautiful colonial building.  Many tourists also enjoy a trip to the  Roman Baths 'Las Bóvedas' or 'The Vaults', that were built in the third century. This  consists of an octagonal building containing a central nucleus with seven rooms around it. There is an octagonal pool in the centre.

For those with more simple pleasures in mind just take a pleasant walk to the centre of town and the beachfront along the Avda. Marques del Duero which is a particularly attractive wide avenue flanked by palm trees, narrow streets and Benahavis, a mountian oasis intriguing small shops, sidewalk cafes and bars.

The beach at San Pedro is nearly 5km and there are several beach bars or chiringuitos and restaurants. The sand, although a little stony is clean and plentiful.

Another attraction is the horse riding school which organises trips for experienced riders and learners along some of the dirt tracks in the hills around the San Pedro area. If golf is more your thing then there are two excellent courses.

If you fancy stretching your legs a little then just ten minutes in the car from San Pedro lies the beautiful mountain village of Benahavis.

Benahavis is a mountain paradise of whitewashed villas, cobbled windy streets and amazing bars, restaurants and hotels. In fact the village is so well renowned for it´s gastronomic delights that it is known as the dinning table of the Costa del Sol and visiters come from far and wide to sample the delicacies served here.

Overall, visit San Pedro as a tourist destination or to live and you will find plenty to do in a setting that is full of history and natural beauty.
