Costa del Sol/NerjaOnce a small fishing village, Nerja is now the biggest resort to the east of Malaga.
Despite itīs ever growing popularity Nerja has avoided becoming a typical holiday resort and retains itīs traditional Spanish charm. The towns name comes from the Arabic 'Naricha' (abundant spring) and it enjoys a privileged climate and fantastic landscape surroundings, where it alternates between spectacular cliffs and golden beaches. One of the main attractions is The Balcón de Europa, a cliff Nerja is probably most famous for its caves which lie some 6km inland. The caves were discovered in 1959 by some boys chasing bats. Instead of bats they stumbled across the entrance to a huge system of limestone caverns. The caves are now protected and have been well preserved with many parts still closed to the public including areas with prehistoric paintings of animals & humans figures. Visitors to the caves can see a series of well lit chambers & archaeological displays. There are also stalactites and stalagmites and a hall containing fallen rocks which indicate a long ago earthquake. Also of interest is the Church of El Salvador, a temple from the 16th century which house important baroque influences.
Also two hours drive is the historical town of Granada and the Alhambra Palace but make sure you book tickets to the Palace in the summer as many a hot and harassed tourist has queued for hours only to leave without gaining entrance! Whether you are looking for a holiday destination, or a new home, a tourist resort or the real Spain ....Nerja with something for everyone offers the very best of both worlds! |
